Rocking Like the ’80s Still Rule at the 2026 Lakefront Music Fest

Rocking Like the ’80s Still Rule at the 2026 Lakefront Music Fest

Todd Swank's Diary Entry for July 12, 2026

Our summer has been packed, and somehow even our nights off turn social. While wandering Costco, we ran into Randy and Cindy Schoen, who lived near my sister about 20 years ago. We’d lost touch, but they’re the kind of people who make it feel like no time has passed. A few minutes catching up in the spice aisle turned into one of those unexpected little reminders that good people never really feel far away.

It was Avery’s turn for a Mayo Clinic checkup. He only has to go every two or three years, but it’s always great seeing Dr. Johnson, the boys’ cardiologist and someone we’ve come to know well over the past decade. Avery’s checkup went well and he doesn't need to come back soon.  That’s exactly the kind of visit we like: catch up with a good man and say, “See you in a few years.”

Our rocking week of the ’80s started Wednesday night at Rhythm on the Rails in downtown Shakopee, a free summer concert series with live music, food, drinks, games, and a street full of people enjoying the night. Def Leggend brought the Def Leppard hits, and for a few hours Lewis Street felt less like Shakopee and more like 1987 with better beer options.

Tom and Kellie Wolf are usually our Rhythm on the Rails partners. We share the same taste in classic rock and the same desire to sit off to the side so the speakers don’t finish off whatever hearing we have left. We always have a great time together, even if getting Tom to actually look at the camera remains one of Shakopee’s tougher summer challenges.

Thursday night, the Browns and Zitzewitzes joined us for a three-hour tour on the boat. Unlike Gilligan, we made it back before three hours turned into a syndicated television series. I also prefer being off the lake before sunset because I’m not entirely sure the boat lights still work. I could check them, of course, but that sounds suspiciously like effort.

The highlight of the week was Rock Night at Prior Lake’s Lakefront Music Fest. The weekend brings in some huge names, but we stick to Friday because country music has never really been our thing. We used to fight our way to the front of the stage, but now they charge extra for the pit and our ears have filed enough formal complaints for one lifetime.

We love running into old friends at Lakefront Music Fest, including Jimi Gilbertson and his sister Trish. Jimi is a big shot with the Prior Lake Rotary Club and gets to guard the VIP section, where $320 buys you perks like shade. That sounded excessive until 95-degree heat and direct sunlight spent several hours turning my forehead into a solar panel. One of these years, I may finally invest.

I think the last time we saw Lisa Maldonado was at this same concert last year. She’s one of those genuinely sweet people who always asks about the boys and makes you feel like no time has passed. She also gave Miss Sheri about five hugs while I got one, which felt a little uneven, but apparently Sheri had the premium friendship package.

Ted and Marcia found us in the crowd and settled in for the show. We occasionally wandered closer to the stage, partly for the music and partly because standing in a packed crowd was somehow our best available shade. Whenever we returned to our chairs, we enjoyed catching up with them, which made the night even better.

Jefferson Starship opened the night by taking us through their own musical family tree, from Jefferson Airplane to Jefferson Starship to Starship. They closed with “We Built This City,” but “White Rabbit” was the song I was waiting for. More than 50 years later, it’s still wonderfully psychedelic and remains one of my all-time favorites.

George Thorogood was next, and “I Drink Alone” has long been one of my favorite karaoke songs because his raspy growl is about as close as my voice gets to a natural fit. I can’t really sing, but I can fake irritated confidence pretty well. It’s the rare song where throat damage actually improves the performance.

Billy Idol closed the night, and for a while it felt like high school had come roaring back, only now everyone had reading glasses and sore knees. He tore through hit after hit, and I kept thinking about how perfectly he played himself in The Wedding Singer, still one of my favorite movie cameos. We left early and missed “Rebel Yell” and “White Wedding,” but beating that massive crowd on the mile walk back to the car and getting home to my bed was absolutely worth sacrificing a little rock-and-roll history.

Hands Up In The Middle Of Minnesota Winter

Hands Up In The Middle Of Minnesota Winter

Todd Swank's Diary Entry for February 1, 2026

Minnesota went full bully mode this week. Wind chills sat at 20 to 30 below and didn’t let up. I escaped to Denver for work, even if it was only one night. Still talking tech. Still talking AI. Just fewer layers. Warmer air. Winter lost a round, and that tiny dose of warmth was enough to reset my brain before heading back into the tundra.

Flying out, we passed right over Prior Lake. My house sits a little south and west of this view. From up here it finally clicked. We don’t live by lakes. We live in an ice cube tray. Somewhere in God’s freezer. One of these years I’m leaving Minnesota for the winter. I’ve been saying that since the Obama administration.

A quiet weekend overall. We did get out for dinner at PLate, which we hadn’t done in a while. No big plans. No rush. Just good food and time together. The steak was really good. The space felt comfortable. Exactly the right amount of effort for January.

I’ve been having a lot of conversations lately about whether we’re sitting in an asset bubble. Gold and silver have been on a tear. Then I walk into Costco and they’re selling gold bars like big-screen TVs. That usually feels like a signal. When the masses show up, the easy money already left. Right on cue, metals took a big selloff Friday. Probably coincidence. Probably also a decent time to think about selling.

Since we didn’t do much this weekend, I talked my wife into driving me out on the lake so I could get the ice-house shot. Even though the ice is quite solid after weeks of deep freeze, that logic still doesn’t comfort a non-swimmer like Miss Sheri. Convincing her to drive her SUV out there is always a negotiation. She sighed. She drove. I got the picture. I’m lucky she supports my weird little missions in life.

Lakefront Music Festival 15 in Prior Lake

Lakefront Music Festival 15 in Prior Lake

Todd Swank's Diary Entry for July 14, 2024

It's outdoor music festival season in Minnesota.  Wednesday night brought us to Rhythm on the Rails in Shakopee.  Krazy Kory was in town for the evening and we connected with Tom & Kellie and Eric & Deanne.  Subsequently a good time was had by all.

Kory wanted to go near the band to get a photo and on our way through the crowd, we bumped into Troy and Rhonda Brown.  I felt quite fortuitous for the encounter!

Thursday night gave us the opportunity to go on a boat ride with Heidi and Lisa.  We tootled around the lake and spent the evening laughing and catching up on each other's lives.  It was a pleasant experience and best of all, nobody pushed me overboard for being obnoxious.  That's a big achievement for me.

The water level on Prior Lake has risen more than 3 feet over the past couple of months so we're finally able to get into Mud Bay again to see Bird Island.  I was happy to see that even though we haven't been able to visit our feathered friends for about a year, they're still living together in happiness.  Although there seems to be quite a bit more poop on the leaves than there used to be.

Friday night brought us to Lakefront Park in Prior Lake for the 15th annual Lakefront Music Fest.  I can't remember how many of these we've attended, but my best guess would be 13.  The lineup was a good one with Bachman Turner Overdrive opening up the evening with many of their favorite hits.  They were Takin' Care of Business if you want my opinion.

We spotted our old friend, Chris Barragy, in the crowd.  He was there on official duty as one of the event photographers.  There's an old wives tale that it's good luck whenever you see a Barragy outside of Clear Lake, Iowa so I'm looking forward to my coming good fortune.

We bumped into many friends including Sue and Roberta.  We normally see each other at competitive Euchre matches so this was a nice change of pace.  And I wasn't losing any money like I normally do when I see them.

Berlin was the next performer.  I must be honest and say I didn't really remember her from my youth although her name did sound familiar.  I thought her full name was East Berlin or West Berlin or something like that, but not positive.  She really Took My Breath Away when she sang her final song about Tom Cruise.

Miss Sheri and I like singing together during concerts but I'm not sure if the people around us enjoy it as much as we do.

Eventually the sun went down and it was time for the headliner to appear.  I didn't notice the guys I was standing in front of when taking this picture, but later noticed they didn't look all that thrilled that I was standing there.

Eventually Pat Benatar came on stage with her husband Neil Giraldo and they were ready to rock!

They sang several songs I didn't recognize, but ended the evening with a bunch of her greatest hits.  Apparently she no longer sings Hit me with your Best Shot to protest gun violence, so Miss Sheri sang it for me on the drive home instead.  She's nice like that.

Changing Season: a New Park, a Football Fumble, & Foliage in Full Swing

Changing Season: a New Park, a Football Fumble, & Foliage in Full Swing

On Thursday night, Avery and Abby invited us over to enjoy some chili and watch Thursday Night Football.  That was a fun way to kickoff the start of the weekend!

They're building a new park right down the street from my house on Spring Lake.  They've had the entrances blocked off since they started, but Miss Sheri and I could wait no more.  We parked nearby and went in to take a peek.  It's obviously still under construction, but it's going to be really nice.  It has a path that goes right along Spring Lake and there will be lake access for kayaks and also a fishing pier from what I'm hearing.  We're excited to take advantage.

I'm always looking for new romantic places to take my wife to walk with her and read poetry and stuff.  Now that I think about it, I better get some new poetry books before this place officially opens.

After we got our fill of being romantic, we headed to Whiskey Inferno for half price steak and whiskey.  It's one of our favorite things to do after 9pm.

On Sunday, we headed to downtown Minneapolis to watch our beloved Vikings.  They've had a tough start to the season starting 0-2 but we felt very confident that they'd get a win today!

Luke joined me for the game and he was also excited to watch our home team get a win.

The Los Angeles Chargers were our opponent and they also had a record of 0-2.  Plus, their most electric offensive player, Austin Ekeler, was injured and out for the game.  Everything was set correctly for the Vikings to get their first win of the year.

Except they didn't.  They lost again.  Of course it was our third close game in a row, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.  Have I ever mentioned how painful it is to be a Minnesota Sports Fan?  It's pretty painful.

The 2023 Vikings NFL Draft Party

The 2023 Vikings NFL Draft Party
Todd Swank's Diary Entry for April 30, 2023

On Thursday night we headed to downtown Minneapolis and US Bank Stadium for the Vikings 2023 NFL Draft Party.

This is our 2nd year in a row going to the event.  Last year they had a big stage with local sports celebrities doing a live play by play of the NFL draft.  This year they skipped the stage and local celebrities and just showed the draft on the big screens.  Still fun, but not quite as fun.

They did have local media reporting from the event, but none of the local broadcasts were played for the crowd here for some silly reason.  I guess they wanted us focused on the national program out of Kansas City.  I kind of thought we could have just done that from home, but guess we would have missed out on the Vikings stadium atmosphere.

We did get photo opps with several team members including our potential #1 running back, Alexander Mattison.  Technically we still have our previous #1 running back, Dalvin Cook, but all indications are he'll be traded before the start of the new season.  I tried to get Alexander to give us some inside scoop, but he just shuffled us along for the next people to get a photo with him.

Harrison "Horrible Harry" Phillips is a defensive lineman with the team and also a really cuddly sort of fellow.

Ty Chandler is another running back with the team although we didn't get to see him play much as he was injured early in his rookie season.  Before that he showed a lot of flash, so hopefully we'll get to see him shine this coming season.

I saw our starting left tackle, Christian Darrisaw, playing Xbox with some fans.  I thought about trying to get a picture with him but he gave me a look like I probably shouldn't interrupt his game.  So I stepped aside and took this picture instead.  It's nice also.

I saw Purple Spiderman nearby so asked him to take a picture with me instead.  Unlike Darrisaw, he was quite happy for the opportunity to join me.

We had the chance to take a tour of the Vikings locker-room which was fun, but pretty empty since it's the off season.  They had a couple lockers made up to look like they were Justin Jefferson's and Harrison Smith's.  I didn't see any unmentionables in either one of them so it just didn't feel like the real thing.

Other highlights of the week included dinner with Tim Ashland at Charlie's on Prior.  We used to connect with Tim all the time back in the day and have vowed to start adding that back into our lives on a regular basis.  He's always a bunch of fun to see.

Our daily dog walks are starting to get more exciting as Spring slowly emerges in Minnesota.  We snuck up on this osprey high on a perch hunting for fish near the shore of Prior Lake.  I was surprised how close he let me get and I snapped some really clear pictures.  This one was my favorite.

We zoomed in on this eagle at the edge of the creek that runs between Spring Lake and Prior Lake.  We figured he was eating something, but couldn't see the big carp he was grasping until we had a chance to look at the pictures up close.  Pretty cool.

About a week ago, we saw a large flock of pelicans land on Prior Lake, but it was too dark to get a decent photo of them.  Luckily, we've had a couple more encounters since.  We've never seen pelicans on Prior lake before so we figured they just must be passing through the area.

Another pleasant surprise we discovered when going through the photos was this carp that popped his head out of the water while I was snapping shots of the birds.  I didn't even notice it at the time.  Apparently the pelicans didn't either as I'm sure they would have swallowed him whole if they had.
