Spending the Night with Caitlin Clark

Spending the Night with Caitlin Clark
Todd Swank's Diary Entry for August 25, 2024

Monday was Miss Sheri’s birthday and we celebrated with Grandma Linda and the kids. A good time was had by all even though Sheri’s still pretending she didn’t just get a year older. Meanwhile, I upheld my reputation being an embarrassing dad in public—throwing out inappropriate humor like it was going out of style. Who says you can’t have fun while the kids are wishing they could disappear?

Later in the week, Luke volunteered to take us out to dinner again. Turns out, being a financial analyst has its perks—not that we're complaining when it means dinner at the Chianti Grill. We had a great time enjoying good food and even better company. Who knew all those numbers he crunches could taste so delicious?

We took a drive down to the lake, and the sky was so stunning that Sheri couldn’t resist capturing it. She asked me to jump into the shot, and I obliged, but in hindsight, my silhouette probably did more to ruin the view than enhance it. Sometimes, you’ve got to let the sky do the showing off—especially when your shadow looks a bit defective!

On Friday, we had our Fantasy Football draft at Steve "Cuds" Cuddihy's house. This league has been going strong for 18 years, and I just realized I'm one of the last three remaining founding members. It’s a testament to how long friendships can last—even if the only thing we agree on is that our fantasy teams are way better than our real-life athletic skills. Here’s to another season of trash talk, questionable draft picks, and hoping we don’t regret our first-round choices by Week 2!

We all take our draft pretty seriously, especially since it's auction-style with Curtis the auctioneer at the helm. As the night goes on, things tend to get a bit... lively. Let’s just say the more the bids climb, the less clear anyone’s strategy seems to be. And while I won’t directly mention the “liquid courage” in the room, let’s just say it flows as freely as the smack talk. By the end of the night, the chaos reaches peak levels—but hey, that’s what makes it fun!

It's been about 14 years since I last won the league, and I haven't even made the playoffs in a couple of seasons. But for some inexplicable reason, I've got a feeling that this is my year. Maybe it’s blind optimism, or maybe I just really love the start of the NFL season. Either way, I’m excited—and probably way too confident. But hey, if this season doesn’t pan out, at least I can add another year to my streak of perfecting the art of losing with style.

We headed to Target Center on Saturday night for the Minnesota Lynx vs. Indiana Fever game. The place was packed, with fans filling up even the nosebleed seats. The lines outside were as long as I’ve ever seen them, even for a Timberwolves game—definitely not your usual WNBA crowd.

The massive crowd at Target Center had one main reason to be there: the return of Caitlin Clark. With her roots and college career in Iowa, she has a huge fanbase just across the border. The energy she brings is something I’ve only seen with athletes like Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan—her presence makes every game feel less like a regular season matchup and more like a can't-miss spectacle.

Miss Sheri has been a big fan of Caitlin Clark since her junior year in college. Having played high school basketball in Iowa herself, she feels a special connection to her. Caitlin’s incredible skill and leadership on the court have made her a powerful inspiration to young girls across the country. Watching Caitlin play isn’t just about the game; it’s about seeing someone break boundaries and set new standards for what’s possible—something truly admirable.

We were especially impressed by how much time Caitlin Clark spent signing autographs before the game even started. The stands were flooded with Caitlin #22 shirts and jerseys—it almost felt like a home game for her. With all that fanfare on their own turf, you’ve got to wonder if the Lynx players were quietly thinking, “Wait, whose house is this again?”

Saturday night was also Maya Moore's jersey hanging ceremony and she received the recognition she truly deserves. As one of the most decorated players in WNBA history, Maya led the Minnesota Lynx to four championships and earned two Finals MVP awards in her career. Being part of this momentous occasion was a powerful experience, as the Target Center paid tribute to a true legend of the game.

It ended up being a tough game for Caitlin and Indiana as they fell to the Lynx 90-80. Despite the excitement around Clark's presence, the Fever struggled, especially in the first quarter where they couldn’t hit a 3-pointer, going 0-for-7 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Minnesota capitalized on their shooting, knocking down six 3-pointers to build a solid lead.

With this win, the Minnesota Lynx secured their spot in the playoffs, showing why they’re always a team to watch when it counts. Who knows, if the Fever can make the cut, we might just see these two teams face off again in the postseason. It would be exciting to see them battle it out on an even bigger stage.

Standing Tall From Maryland to Minnesota

Standing Tall From Maryland to Minnesota
Todd Swank's Diary Entry for August 18, 2024

My week started off with a work trip to Baltimore, Maryland—my first time visiting the city. As I looked out the plane window, the view was beautiful, and I snapped a picture of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Little did I realize at the time, this was the same bridge that tragically collapsed earlier this year after a cargo ship collided with it. It’s a crazy reminder of how quickly circumstances can shift, even when all seems well.

Over two nights in Baltimore, I had three customer meetings, all within walking distance of the beautiful harbor. I’m always drawn to water, and as I admired the view, I wished Miss Sheri were with me. I snapped this picture and sent it to her, telling her just that. It was a sweet moment—assuming she actually got the message and didn’t block my texts while I’m out of town.

I always get excited when I spot some critters, and this time was no exception. The harbor was crawling with these huge, beautiful blue crabs, and I even managed to spot an American eel—though it’s playing a bit of hide-and-seek in this photo. I’ll take any excuse to watch wildlife in action, even if it’s just for a few minutes. I’m sure the locals nearby were wondering if I’d lost my mind staring so intently at what they probably thought was just some rocks.

On Thursday night, we were headed out with Sue and Ron Korkowski in Lakeville when they asked about how things were going with Avery and Abby’s new house. Since we were practically in the neighborhood, I casually suggested we drop by. I think the kids were happy to see us once they got over the surprise invasion, that is!

We were actually headed to an event called Taste of Lakeville—a local festival where restaurants and wineries offer samples of their best, all for a good cause. But, as usual, it quickly spiraled into a night of gluttony and debauchery. We seem to have a knack for turning these charity events into our own personal feast-fest. I guess we’re just really good at overindulging for a good cause.

It was a good night, especially after they handed me a free bucket hat and sunglasses. Nothing says VIP treatment like looking like you raided the lost-and-found! At that point, I figured I had two choices: blend in with the crowd or fully embrace my new look. Spoiler alert—I went full bucket hat mode and owned it. When life gives you freebies, you might as well make a fashion statement, right?

Miss Sheri's birthday is Monday, so naturally, I asked what she wanted to do to celebrate. Without missing a beat, she said she wanted to visit Como Zoo & Conservatory. That’s when I realized why we’ve made it through 30 years of marriage—she chose a place with no entry fee for her birthday! It’s the little things that keep a relationship going strong. Who needs fancy dinners or expensive gifts when you can enjoy a day surrounded by nature? Turns out, the best love stories come with free admission.

We’ve been coming to Como Zoo for decades, and we always enjoy this view of the Sunken Garden. It’s serene, peaceful, and inspiring—a perfect spot to pause and take it all in. Honestly, it’s the kind of place where you can’t help but feel a little more zen... or at least pretend you’ve got life all figured out while secretly debating if it’s too early to hit the snack bar. Either way, this garden always delivers.

The Japanese Garden at Como Zoo is one of those spots that makes you want to slow down and really absorb the scenery.  The rocks are meticulously placed, the water is still, and everything feels perfectly balanced. It’s peaceful, but you can’t help but wonder how much effort it takes to make something look so effortless.

All in all, it was a great visit to the zoo. Even though we still feel a bit conflicted about the animals being in captivity, seeing them up close is always a blast. This guy especially stood out—he was just so cool. I couldn’t help but wonder what was going through his mind as he sat there, perfectly still. Maybe it was something like, “You enjoy your visit, humans—I’ll just be here, planning my vengeance.”

Here's a few TikTok videos I created this week that capture some of the fun moments along the way.

On the Field before the Vikings & Raiders Preseason Game

On the Field before the Vikings & Raiders Preseason Game
Todd Swank's Diary Entry for August 11, 2024

Work brought me to Austin, Texas this week.  I may have been alone, but I wasn't going to let that spoil the fun.  I hung-out for awhile at the hotel's rooftop bar and soaked in the 105 degree heat with a complimentary drink they were nice enough to give me.

I was bored so spent some time entertaining myself by making TikTok videos.

Guess where i am?

On Friday night, our good friends Portia and Doc invited us to Jordan, Minnesota for a night full of debauchery.

We started out the evening at a place called the Pickled Pig Pub.  They told us to meet them in the patio area which was a bit hidden due to construction.  I didn't realize it was a biker bar until we arrived so I'm sure I fit right in with my bright blue shirt amongst the leather-clad patrons.  It was fun walking through the bar 3 times before we finally figured out where we were going.

After dinner, they wanted to take us for a walk to a nearby park which had a beautiful waterfall.  Miss Sheri has always told me I shouldn't go chasing waterfalls.  She thinks I'd be better off sticking to the rivers and lakes that I'm used to.  Really she knows that I'm gonna have it my way or nothing at all.  She just thinks I may be moving too fast.

Portia pointed out this tree in the water and suggested we walk out onto it.  The spouses didn't think it was such a great idea, but I'm always up for a challenge.  Probably not my wisest move, but lucky for us we were able to stay completely dry and not turn into a cautionary tale.

Saturday brought us to US Bank Stadium for the Minnesota Vikings & Oakland Raiders first preseason game of the year.

Bring a season ticket holder gives us some extra perks.  There was an email that went out earlier this week offering a chance to be in a drawing to go on the field during team introductions and hold the team flag.  Lucky for us, we were selected!

Before we went out on the field, one of the Vikings Cheerleaders tried recruiting Sheri to join the squad and go out and do some dance moves with them.  Unfortunately I had to insist she say no and stick with me in case I had any challenges holding the flag.

Turns out I needn't have worried.  It wasn't that hard at all to hold it.  It had some convenient little straps and was actually pretty easy to lift.  Hope I didn't spoil her dreams.

She looked pretty happy to be there as well and we ended up being in the right place to see a whole bunch of the Raiders players as they ran right by us multiple times.  Here's a video that shows our experience:

Being a preseason game, there's usually not too much exciting to watch.  This year was different because it gave us our first glimpse of seeing our rookie quarterback, JJ McCarthy, in action.  He started off a little rough with an early interception, but came back in the second half and threw a couple of beautiful touchdowns.  Could we finally have our franchise quarterback?  We're quite overdue for one.

The game itself actually ended up being pretty exciting.  I didn't realize it going into it, but Minnesota had lost it's previous 10 preseason games going back several seasons.  They were down 23-21 all the way to the very end when their rookie kicker hit a 38 yard field goal at the buzzer to seal the win.   Some might say these games are meaningless, but I'm pretty sure this is the Vikings year to go to the Super Bowl after witnessing this performance!!

Rolling on the River with Friends and Family

Rolling on the River with Friends and Family
Todd Swank's Diary Entry for August 4, 2024

It was an exciting week for Avery and Abby when they closed on their first house in Lakeville, Minnesota.  We're so happy for them and look forward to watching them turn it from their house into their home.

Miss Sheri is especially excited that this should mean Avery won't be moving again any time soon.  She's had to move our sons many times over the past few years and her darned husband just isn't much help in this area.

On Saturday we went to the St. Croix River to hang out with our good friends the Zitzewitz and the Brown families.  We were looking forward to a day of fun and sun out in the water.

Captain Karl always knows right where to take his for maximum enjoyment.  I wish I had those kind of skills.

It gets harder and harder to get the kids all together at the same time, so we have to be creative as possible to entice them to join us.

The weather was perfect, the water was warm, and we had a bunch of toys to keep us all entertained.  Hard to beat that kind of a day!

The kids all took turns with the jet ski.  Usually I partake in the excitement but not this time.  I may finally be getting too old for these kinds of adrenaline rushes.

After we spent a day in the water, we sat around and had nice conversations with our friends.  It's always good to solve the world's problems while floating on the river.

We topped the night off with a great dinner.  The nice thing about hanging out with the Browns and the Zitzewitzes is you know there's always going to be some good food coming at some time.

Pretty soon the sun started going down behind the horizon which made us know our good times were coming to an end for the day.  Time flies when you're having fun!

When it's August in Minnesota, you gotta soak up the sun as much as humanly possible.  Because we know it won't be long until winter is coming.  That's a pleasant thought to end the weekend!
