Clear Hearts, Full Holidays, Can’t Lose

Clear Hearts, Full Holidays, Can’t Lose
Todd Swank's Diary Entry for November 4, 2024

Last year, I told you they discovered I had an aortic aneurysm—a fun little surprise to spice up middle age. This week, I went back to Mayo Clinic for my annual checkup: tests, scans, and the usual pre-appointment dread. The great news? The aneurysm hasn’t grown much, if at all, so no surgery on the horizon, and I don’t need another checkup for a year.

For now, I’m embracing the holiday season, grateful for the good news, and pretending I’ll actually follow my doctor’s advice about exercise. Life’s not perfect, but it’s good—and that’s more than enough to celebrate.

One of my tests this week was a full MRI of my heart. I thought I'd done one of these before, but that must have been a CT Scan.  I thought it’d be quick—maybe a minute or two. Then, five minutes in, I was still trapped in the tube, and panic crept up like a bad punchline. They’d given me an emergency bubble to squeeze, which I initially thought was overkill. Turns out, I was gripping it like my life depended on it in no time.

Embarrassed after they pulled me out, I asked the technicians how much longer would it take? When they said, “30 to 45 minutes,” I nearly lost it. After a quick pep talk and some deep breaths, I told them to send me back in. Physically, it was uncomfortable—my arm hurt, my hand went numb, and I felt like a sardine in a can. But mentally? That was the real fight.

I cycled through stress techniques and prayers, but the thing that saved me? Karaoke. I silently sang Born to Be Wild, What a Wonderful World, and Let’s Go Crazy on repeat, clinging to the songs like a lifeline. When it was finally over, I was grateful—not just for the good results, but for surviving 45 minutes in the ultimate test of mental endurance. And yes, I’ll be adding “karaoke under duress” to my resume.

Driving back from Mayo Clinic, winter decided to make an entrance with snow, ice, and a truck spinning out right in front of us. Luckily, we made it home safe, though the roads were a bit of a circus.  I read the next day there 577 accidents throughout the state of Minnesota that evening.  The snow’s already gone, but it was a reminder that Minnesota’s winter shenanigans are just warming up.

Buckle up—it’s going to be a ride.

Miss Sheri and I were lucky enough to score advanced screening tickets for Gladiator II before its release. While the original film was a gritty masterpiece that made you feel the dust and blood of the Colosseum, this sequel cranks up the spectacle to an almost absurd level. Think vicious monkeys and sharks in the arena—it’s a bit much, but somehow still works. Sure, it’s over the top, but for a couple of hours, you’re back in the days of the Roman Empire, soaking in the chaos and drama. If you loved the first movie, this one’s a wild ride worth taking.

It’s hard to believe Thanksgiving is here already—time to kick off the season of holiday shopping, festive chaos, and the joy of finding that one perfect gift you know will make someone smile. But the best part? Spending time with family, friends, and the people who make the holidays feel like home. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone—here’s to full hearts, empty wallets, and enough pie to forget about both!

Ever wonder if AI could help make you smarter with your money? Earlier this year, I let ChatGPT inspire me to dive into quantum computing stocks, turning $6,000 into nearly $11,000 in eight months. No, this isn’t a pitch or a get-rich-quick scheme—just a fun, wild experiment that paid off. I’m sharing the full story because it’s proof that with curiosity, guts, and a little help from technology, we can explore amazing opportunities.

Advance Screening of Ready Player One

Advance Screening of Ready Player One
Todd Swank's Diary Entry for March 27, 2018

We had the opportunity to see an Advance Screening of Ready Player One last night.  It's a roller-coaster ride of a movie  filled with Spielberg Magic.  It takes place in a dystopian future where society's only escape is through a Virtual Reality World called the Oasis.  I read the book and loved it.  I was very happy with how it translated to the screen.  The eighties nostalgia is great, but not as overwhelming as it was in the book.  In it's place is an incredible glimpse of our potential future with VR.  Technology like this will revolutionize our lives some day in ways we can't even imagine.

Avery and his girlfrend, Emma, were able to join us for the show.  It was way more packed than most Advance Screenings we've attended so I think this movie will have a HUGE opening weekend.

Best of all, a couple of professors doing Virtual Reality research at the University of Minnesota were there for a speaker panel afterwards.  Avery was able to introduce himself as a student currently attending the U's college of science & engineering with a background in programming VR apps in Unity on our HTC Vive at home.  Fingers crossed that he might be able  to get involved in some research projects over there.  I think that would be so cool.  Because then I'm going to sneak into their lab for some high tech demos!!

First Boat Ride of 2013

First Boat Ride of 2013
Todd Swank's Diary Entry for June 9, 2013

On Monday night, we went to the last Boy Scout meeting before summer break and were proud of Luke and Avery as they both earned their Star ranks.  Now they only need to earn their Life ranks and then they can start working on becoming Eagle Scouts.  I never would have guessed they would have lasted this long in scouts, but am really glad they have.  They gain a lot of helpful skills and experience through this program and there's so many great people involved in our troop.  We feel blessed to be part of it.

On Friday night, we drug Grandma Linda out of her house to the new movie, The Intern, starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson.  We liked those guys in Wedding Crashers, so we thought this would be a good movie also.  We were wrong.  Although it certainly had it's funny moments, the plot was pretty unbelievable and predictable all at the same time.

About halfway through the movie, I decided to walk out and spend the rest of the evening riding this prop from the movie Turbo in the lobby instead.  I think I made the right choice.

Although it's still ridiculously cold for June, we decided we couldn't wait any more and drug the boat out of the garage for our first boat ride of the year.  It was short, but pleasant.

It was also pretty dangerous apparently, although we didn't even know the risks we were taking until I was looking through these pictures the next evening.  If you look at what is behind the boat, you'll see that we have one of those fresh water great white sharks stalking us.  I'm so glad it was too cold for swimming, else we'd have been goners!

Although we didn't stay out for long, we did continue our bird watching hobby and found this Great Blue Heron sitting in a tree high over our heads.  These guys are huge and fun to watch flying over the lake because they're kind of awkward.  Just like me.

Sunny pretended he was interested in the birds, but I knew it was a challenge for him.  He's not real fond of riding around in the boat.

He'd much rather be jumping into the lake rather than floating around on top of it.  I guess I can't blame him.

The Hunger Games is the "THE BEST AMERICAN SCI-FI FILM SINCE 'THE MATRIX'"

Or How a 41 Year Old Man Became Enamored With a Book That Was Originally Targeted at Teen-Age Girls.

I just saw this review on BoxOfficeMagazine.com, calling the upcoming movie "The Hunger Games" the Best American SCI-FI Film since 'THE MATRIX.

I Get It.

Anticipation for this movie is currently at an all time high for me!

I honestly can't remember the last time I was this excited to see a movie.

I'm not sure if I've ever been this excited to see a movie.

I first heard about the Hunger Games when it appeared on the cover of EW Magazine back in May of 2011.

This character "Katniss Everdeen" mesmerized me from the beginning.

I read the article and became fascinated.  It told of a popular set of books by Suzanne Collins where a futuristic society forces 12-18 year old children to compete in a Battle to the Death tournament.

Now that's something different.

I quickly downloaded the first book and read it all in a couple of days.  Books 2 and 3 were finished within the next week.  I hated the ending because it wasn't all neat and happy, but it stuck with me.

Stuck with me enough that I did something I've never done before.  I started following movie blogs.  I followed every post of 3 or 4 of them including:

I told my wife about the books and she read all three books in less than a week.  Then she turned my boys on to them and now we're all hooked.

We've been watching every trailer and video that has hit the web.

Stuff like this brand new one that just showed up online today:

I even started my own Pinterest Board and regularly post any interesting videos and pictures I find featuring the stars and also interesting screen shots from the movie.

Now it's only a week away until the movie is released and

I can't wait to see it!

Are there any other men above the age of 30

that feel the same way I do?

Or is this something I need to discuss with my therapist?
